It is easy to pontificate about the need for businesses to generate content and use it as the basis of their digital marketing strategy, however, lifting your pen off the desk is often quite a daunting process for some clients.
Whether or not you outsource your content production to an agency such as Enlighten IC or you draft your own, you need to invest in a content calendar. There is no point lurching from month to month with seemingly impossible deadlines looming large all the time.
The bottom line is that content marketing, if done right, can help you build your business. The more often you blog the more visitors you will get and ultimately the more leads you will get converting through to sales.
So where do you turn to build this content calendar? What on all Earth are you going to put in it? Getting this plan in place is the first stop on your journey to content enlightenment…
1. What Do You Passionately Believe In?
Take it from me, the more passionate you are about a subject matter the easier it is to write about. What is it you are interested in (related to your business of course!) and what do you care about? If you start with a list of at least 6 to 10 topics here you’re away and you’ve made that start towards content happiness…
2. What Are Others Talking About?
Take to social media and search to find out about what people are talking about. The nature of Twitter makes this a very good source for new ideas.
Full Disclosure: how else did I come up with this for a blog idea? Monitor a few channels on social media and you will get a sense of what is topical and what you can tap into that will resonate with your audience. But don't just copy other people's ideas - make them your own!!!
3. Ask The Audience
Having listened to all sorts of audiences you may have a germ of an idea. If this is the case why not bounce if off a contact? You may have a client you get along with quite well. I’m sure they’d be touched if you asked for their advice in this regard...
4. Look At Your Competitors
Whilst I am not an advocate of constantly checking in on your competitors and copying their approach to things, it can be worthwhile dipping in and seeing what they are blogging about or what they are up to on social media. Not with a view to copying it but it may just stimulate you in another direction.
5. Interview A Rockstar!
I’m sure Justin Bieber isn’t on everyone’s speed dial but find out who the Gods are within your niche. I don’t mean your ‘big’ competitors, I mean who are the influencers in your space? There must be someone with a bucket load of authority in your space and who you don’t compete with. Firstly, have a look at what they are talking about at this moment in time and if you thought it appropriate, why not go big, reach out and ask them to Guest Blog for you? Who knows you might land a biggie and just think about the powerful domain authority from any links they give back to you. SEO nirvana!!!!
So, there you go, 5 Sure Fire Ways To Get Your Content Marketing Of To A Flying Start. This list isn’t definitive but it may just stimulate you in a few different directions to allow you to dust off your pen and get started.
But please, take my advice and spend some time building a Content Calendar if only just to keep you sane! If you’re interested in a copy of our very own Content Marketing Calendar, please get in touch and I will send you a free copy.
